The story begins three days after the events of Powerless. Kai Azer, who now serves as Enforcer for his brother, Kitt, who has ascended to the throne, is strolling through the palace. He stops in the kitchen, where he meets Gail, the cook, who has all but raised him and Kitt. She worries about the brothers’ well-being after their father’s death. Gail gives Kai a fresh sticky bun, as is their tradition every year on the same day. Kai takes the bun to the gardens, where he sits under a willow tree and lights a candle to honor the birthday of someone he refers to only as “A.”
Paedyn, who is injured and alone, has taken refuge in her old home. Digging under the floorboards to retrieve some supplies hidden by her father, she accidentally finds her father’s journal and takes it, hoping to read it later. She’s still reeling from the events of the Third Trial and Kitt’s betrayal. As she prepares to flee the city, someone begins pounding on the door, so she quickly scurries up the chimney. From her hiding place, she hears Kai enter the house with other Imperials, looking for her.
